Week 2 @ St. Johns
BEd journey
St. Johns week 2 (12.08.24- 16.08.24)
August 17, 2024
Week 2 Reflection: August 12, 2024 - August 16, 2024
August 12, 2024: Executive, President, Vice President and Their Functions
This week, we started by discussing the Executive branch of the government, focusing on the President and Vice President of India. I explained their roles and functions, such as the President's constitutional duties and the role of the Vice President as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. I used a graphic organizer to help students visualize the functions of both positions and how they contribute to the government system. The class responded well to this method, and many students asked insightful questions about the powers of the President. My mentor, Ms. Jacquiline, recommended incorporating real-life examples to make the discussion even more relatable, which I plan to do in upcoming lessons.
August 13, 2024: Union Council of Ministers & Prime Minister
On the following day, we moved on to the Union Council of Ministers and the Prime Minister. I explained the roles and responsibilities of the Council of Ministers, highlighting the distinctions between Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State, and Independent Ministers. We discussed how the Prime Minister plays a crucial role in leading the government and coordinating between various ministries. I made use of a flowchart to show the structure of the Council of Ministers and their roles. The students were engaged, and they seemed to grasp the hierarchical structure of the Union Cabinet.
August 14, 2024: Judiciary (Concept Attainment Model)
On August 14, I used the Concept Attainment Model to teach the Judiciary system. The goal was to help students understand the concept of the judiciary by identifying key characteristics of the Indian judicial system. I began by giving examples of cases, both real and hypothetical, and asked the students to identify which aspects of the judiciary were involved in these cases. We then discussed the structure of the judiciary, from the Supreme Court to the lower courts, and its functions. My class teacher, Dr. Bindu B, observed the class and provided valuable feedback. She suggested I incorporate more interactive questioning during the Concept Attainment process to enhance critical thinking and better engage the students. I plan to implement this advice in future lessons.
There was no class as we celebrated Independence Day. We participated in the flag hoisting ceremony, which provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of the Constitution and the role of the government in upholding the principles of justice and equality. It was a memorable day for the students, as they reflected on the values of independence and governance, linking it with the chapter on "Our Government."
August 16, 2024: Supreme Court (Class Observation by Dr. Bindu B)
On the final day of the week, we covered the Supreme Court of India, focusing on its role as the highest judicial authority in the country. I explained the process of how judges are appointed and their significance in maintaining the rule of law. I also used visual aids like a diagram of the hierarchy of courts, starting from the Supreme Court to the district courts, to give the students a clearer understanding of the judicial system. Dr. Bindu B observed the class again, and I received valuable feedback on how to improve the pacing of the lesson and ensure that all students were following the concepts.
Reflection:
This week was both challenging and rewarding. The lessons were complex, involving the intricate workings of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. I found that breaking down the information using visual aids and models, such as graphic organizers and flowcharts, made the material more digestible for the students. However, there were some moments where I felt the class needed more time to grasp the finer details, especially in the lesson on the Judiciary.
